Autofocus / Manual Focus

I have had camera lockups on few occasions when using auto-focus.
To be safe on every event I use manual focus to prevent these lockups.
However, using manual focus, in many cases people move very close to the camera causing them to be less sharp then people standing on the "correct" position. (it's not all blurry, but it's also not perfectly sharp)
It's something i've come to accept but I was wondering.

Will there ever be a "fix" for the auto-focus lockups no matter how crazy people move or where they stand in front of the camera?
I'd really like to utilize the auto-focus to ensure all people are always in-focus and sharp no matter where you stand in front of the camera. (like 50cm or 2 meter away from the camera)
Are there specific cameras out there with autofocus that never experience lockups?

Remember when setting your aperture for proper depth of field (see joe's illustration) you are assuring that the people in the front middle and back will be in focus. in autofocus, the camera will lock into the person close to the lens making the people in the back go into a soft focus, the lockup is caused because when your camera locks into the closes person and that person moves the camera has to find another focus point causing the lockup and delay in processing. check out this video on DSLR This is a good video on how to set up a DSLR even if it's another software it still works with spark booth
