sparkbooth-status.txt is an output file. I do not understand what you mean
    by inserting code into it?
You are suppose to watch the file for changes and then do something in
    response to it

You have a script or application watch the contents of the status file and
turn on or off the lights based on what is written out to the file. The
list of possible output to the file is listed at
    http://help.sparkbooth.com/kb/getting-started/status-file
